Before you turn your heating on this fall, seven checks decide whether your furnace lasts the winter or quits on the first freezing night. One of the most common reasons a furnace lights and then shuts off seconds later is a thin metal rod that costs $5 to $25. Catch it now and it's an ordinary service call; on the first freezing night it's emergency rates, up to $215 an hour.
I'm Richard Nakamura. I fixed appliances for thirty years. The checklist comes from ENERGY STAR, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the furnace makers' own manuals (Carrier, Trane, Lennox and more).
The 7 checks:
1. Carbon monoxide and smoke alarms, before the furnace runs at all (and what the end-of-life chirp vs. a real CO alarm means)
2. The filter, and why a clogged one trips the high-limit switch (power off first)
3. Registers, returns and the floor around the furnace (no gas cans, paint or cleaners nearby)
4. The thermostat: new batteries, leave it on OFF until the test run, and heat pump settings (aux vs. emergency heat)
5. The two white plastic pipes and the condensate drain on high-efficiency furnaces (look from the ground, never climb on the roof)
6. The test run on a cool afternoon: the igniter glow, the flame sensor, the first-run smell, and what to do if you smell gas
7. Book the fall check-up now, before the first cold spell fills every contractor's calendar
If you ever smell rotten eggs: leave right away without touching switches, the thermostat or a light, and call 911 and the gas company from outside, well away from the house.
