Nine Japanese cleaning habits keep a house clean on about 10 minutes a day, and the first one works before dirt even gets through the door. Another gets rid of the tablet a lot of people drop in the toilet tank: toilet makers say it can damage the parts inside until the toilet leaks, and a toilet that runs nonstop can waste 200 gallons of water or more a day, according to the EPA.
I'm Richard Nakamura. I fixed appliances for thirty years. The habits come from Japanese homes and schools, and the reasons behind them come from the EPA, the CDC, the toilet and flooring makers and Japan's own household-products companies.
The 9 habits:
1. Outdoor shoes stop at the door (and why indoor-only shoes beat slippers, per the CDC)
2. Everything gets one home, starting with a landing spot by the door for the keys, the coat and the mail
3. Keep the counters clear: a 10-second wipe instead of wiping around the clutter
4. Clean while you're already there (tsuide souji): the sink, the cool stovetop, the mirror, the microwave and every spill
5. A net in the kitchen drain, and grease never goes down the pipe
6. A dry wipe of the floor every day, standing up, with a flat mop instead of hands and knees
7. A 30-second toilet wipe every day, no tablets in the tank, and the food-coloring test for a leaking flapper
8. Leave the shower dry: squeegee, fan, and indoor humidity below 60%
9. The 10-minute evening reset that puts the other eight together (5 minutes each if two of you live there)
Bleach safety: never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar, a toilet bowl cleaner or any other cleaner. One cleaner at a time, with the window open.
