Description
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease in many countries, is a progressive neurological disorder that damages the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. These specialised nerve cells, called motor neurons, carry signals from the brain and spinal cord to muscles, allowing us to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. As motor neurons progressively degenerate, muscles become weaker and may eventually waste away. Although ALS primarily affects movement, it can also affect communication, swallowing, breathing, and, in some individuals, aspects of thinking and behaviour. The underlying causes are complex and may involve genetic factors, cellular stress, protein abnormalities, and disturbances in neuronal function. In this video, we will explore the biology of ALS, its clinical features, diagnostic methods, available treatments, and the ongoing research seeking to improve outcomes for people living with this condition.
By the end of this video, you will have a comprehensive understanding of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, from motor neuron degeneration and genetic mechanisms to clinical symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and emerging research. Whether you are a biology student, biomedical science learner, healthcare professional, or someone interested in neuroscience, this video will help you connect the molecular biology of ALS with its effects on movement and everyday life. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the science behind ALS and the continuing search for more effective treatments.
This video is intended for educational purposes and does not replace professional medical advice. Anyone experiencing progressive muscle weakness, speech difficulties, swallowing problems, or unexplained changes in movement should seek medical assessment.
