Description

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Without sufficient insulin, glucose cannot be regulated effectively, causing blood glucose levels to rise and preventing the body from using and storing energy normally. Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is not primarily caused by insulin resistance or lifestyle factors. It can develop at any age and requires lifelong insulin replacement to maintain glucose control and prevent serious complications. In this video, we will explore the underlying biology of type 1 diabetes, the role of the immune system, common symptoms, diagnostic methods, insulin therapy, and the principles of daily diabetes management. Type 1 diabetes requires ongoing medical care and individualised treatment. Sudden symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, abdominal pain, deep or rapid breathing, or unusual drowsiness may indicate serious illness, including diabetic ketoacidosis, and require urgent medical assessment.
