Description
During World War I, the British Army executed 306 of its own soldiers for offenses such as cowardice, desertion, and refusing orders. Military leaders believed harsh punishments were necessary to maintain discipline under the extreme pressures of war.
Many of the condemned soldiers were young men who had endured months or years of relentless artillery bombardment, combat, and life in the trenches. Some displayed symptoms of what was then called "shell shock"—a psychological condition that could cause trembling, panic, paralysis, and an inability to function under stress.
At the time, little was understood about combat trauma. Decades later, many historians and medical experts argued that some of these men were suffering from severe psychological injuries rather than cowardice. In 2006, the British government granted posthumous pardons to the soldiers executed during the war.
