Description
If natural selection only rewards people who have children, why has same-sex attraction shown up in every human population throughout history? This video follows the science of how families, mothers’ bodies, and even straight siblings may have quietly kept these genes alive for hundreds of thousands of years.
We start with a puzzle Darwin himself thought could sink his whole theory, the sterile worker ants that never reproduce. From there, we head to the forager camps where human babies were raised by a whole crowd, and to Samoa, where researchers tested the famous “gay uncle” idea. Then come Italian family trees full of extra babies on the mother’s side, and a strange pattern linked to older brothers that may trace back to a mother’s immune system. We also visit the animal world, from peacemaking bonobos to female albatross pairs in Hawaii. Finally, we look at the largest genetic study of sexual behavior ever done and the surprising twist it found in straight people.
No single answer explains it all. But together, these findings paint a very different picture of what a human family is built to be.
If you enjoy science that makes you look at everyday life a little differently, subscribe for more.
