A fleck of charcoal smaller than your fingernail, sealed in a plastic bag, is holding an entire monument hostage. One team dated charcoal from Ohio's Great Serpent Mound and got roughly 1070 CE. Another team drilled in and got about 300 BCE. Same serpent. Fourteen hundred years apart. And beneath its coils, the bedrock is shattered and punched upward, the scar of something that slammed into Ohio hundreds of millions of years ago. So who built a quarter-mile snake on a crater? Here's what nobody tells you: the first people to steal this monument's story weren't trying to date it.
Picture where this thing actually is. Adams County, southern Ohio, a few miles outside a small town called Peebles. Farm roads, tree lines, quiet. Then you climb onto a bluff above a stream called Ohio Brush Creek, and the ground starts moving under your eyes.

Source : Facts: 1,348 feet long in Adams County near Peebles. Fletcher and Cameron's 1996 analysis dated charcoal to about 1070 CE (Fort Ancient); 2014 radiocarbon studies concluded it was built around 300 BCE by the Adena. It sits on the Serpent Mound crater, around 8.7 miles in diameter, formed 252–330 million years ago. The head area aligns to the summer solstice sunset and the tail to the winter solstice sunrise.
