Description
The janissary colonel's title was çorbacı, the soup maker.
The corps took its ranks from the kitchen, and each company's most treasured possession was a huge copper cooking pot.
Most janissaries began as Christian boys, taken from Balkan villages in the levy known as the devşirme.
Goodwin records that families often married their sons off at twelve, because married boys could not be taken. 📖 Source: Godfrey Goodwin, The Janissaries (Saqi) and David Nicolle, The Janissaries (Osprey Elite 58).
In the register, each boy's father was renamed Abdullah, servant of God.
Then came the white felt börk, with a gilded spoon holder, the kaşıklık, on the front.
At first the corps looked down on guns as dirty, until they saw what guns did in Hungary in 1440–43.
At Mohács in 1526, Goodwin, following the Ottoman chronicler Kemalpaşazade, has one janissary volley put a Hungarian wing to flight.
On parade, every man stood in silence as the company pot passed, and losing it in battle disgraced the officers.
Even the sultan was enrolled in the first company, and the janissaries called him the father who feeds us.
So when they turned on their masters, they tipped the pots over.
In June 1826, the artillery was turned on their barracks, and the barracks burned with the rebels inside.
Mahmud II's orders to the provinces said to take their cauldrons, since they belonged to the state and not to the soldiers.
And never to speak their name again.

Which warrior should we reconstruct next?
