Description

In the last years of the Western Roman Empire, a few soldiers from Passau were killed walking to Italy to collect their wages. For centuries, towns along the upper Danube had kept garrisons paid from the public purse. Then the money stopped coming, and one garrison after another simply melted away. Only the troop at Batavis, today's Passau in Germany, held on, still guarding the walls without pay. 📖 Source: Eugippius, The Life of Saint Severinus, trans. George W. Robinson, Harvard University Press (1914) So a few of them set out over the Alps for Italy, to bring back the last pay owed to the whole troop. They never arrived. Raiders killed them on the road, and soon after the river carried their bodies to the bank below the town. The story comes from chapter 20 of the Life of Saint Severinus, written around 511 by a monk of Severinus's own community. It gives no year, no number of men and no place for the attack. Finds from late Roman Passau fit the picture: crossbow brooches, belt fittings and spearheads, now in the Römermuseum Kastell Boiotro. His vision of the river "sprinkled with human blood" belongs to the saint's legend, not the record. That was how Rome ended here, not with a last stand but with a payday that never came. People ask how one person makes these. The answer is musayko.com, a platform I built to do it, and it is open to other creators now. Which empire should we watch fall next?
