Description

In 1976, construction workers digging at a residence in La Jolla, California, uncovered two ancient human skeletons. What initially appeared to be a routine archaeological discovery would soon become one of the most important and controversial finds in American archaeology. The remains belonged to a young man and a woman who lived nearly 10,000 years ago along the Pacific coast, during a time when the first peoples of the Americas were still adapting to a rapidly changing post-Ice Age world. Through decades of scientific study, researchers uncovered evidence of their diet, lifestyle, and connection to one of North America's earliest coastal communities. But the story did not end there. As scientists sought to learn more from these remarkably preserved remains, including the possibility of recovering ancient DNA, Native American tribes represented by the Kumeyaay Cultural Repatriation Committee claimed the individuals as their ancestors. What followed was a years-long legal battle involving archaeologists, universities, federal courts, and questions that continue to shape archaeology today. Who were these ancient people? What can their bones reveal about the earliest Americans? And how should science balance the pursuit of knowledge with respect for Indigenous communities and ancestral remains? This documentary explores the discovery of the La Jolla Skeletons, the scientific investigations that followed, and the legal and ethical debate that transformed them into one of the most significant archaeological cases in modern American history.
