Description
For decades, archaeologists debated whether the Clovis people—the makers of North America's famous fluted spear points—ever ventured into Central and South America. While the traditional "Clovis First" theory has largely been overturned by older archaeological sites, one mystery remained: did populations associated with the Clovis culture spread beyond North America and help shape the earliest peoples of the southern continents?
In this video, we explore a groundbreaking ancient DNA study that analyzed the genomes of some of the oldest human remains ever recovered from Central and South America. By comparing these individuals to Anzick-1, the only known Clovis-associated human burial, scientists uncovered remarkable evidence that people closely related to the Clovis population expanded thousands of miles southward into regions as distant as Chile and Brazil.
But the discovery didn't stop there.
The DNA revealed an even greater mystery. Around 9,000 years ago, the genetic signature linking these early South Americans to the Clovis-associated population largely disappeared. In its place appeared a different lineage, suggesting that a major population replacement occurred across large parts of Central and South America. Who were these people? Where did they come from? And what happened to the descendants of the Clovis expansion?
Join us as we explore the origins of the first Americans, the Bering Land Bridge, the Kelp Highway migration hypothesis, the spread of Clovis and Fishtail technologies, and the ancient DNA evidence that is rewriting one of the most important chapters in human history.
The story of the peopling of the Americas is far more complex than anyone once imagined—and new discoveries continue to reveal just how dynamic, interconnected, and mysterious the ancient world truly was.
