Thirty Rabbits and a Drought: A 1954 Texas Story | Historical Fiction

In 1954, a young woman in rural Texas pays a single dollar for thirty starving rabbits nobody else wants. Guided by her grandmother's forgotten notebook, Adeline Marsh nurses them back to health — just as a devastating drought cripples Comanche County. A quiet story about patience, forgotten knowledge, and resilience. Historical context: The 1950s drought (roughly 1950–1957) was one of the worst in Texas history, drying up wells and destroying cattle herds across the state. Small-scale rabbit keeping was a real survival strategy for rural families in hard times, requiring little land or feed. This story is fictional, inspired by real history.
