Description
Take a trip back to the golden age of arcades from the late 80s and early 90s. In this video, I’m sharing the story of three iconic Seattle-area arcades that defined my childhood: Fun 'N Games at the Alderwood Mall, Funtasia in Edmonds, and the legendary Seattle Funplex.
From the neon glow of mall arcades to the sprawling excitement of family fun centers, we track the history of these gaming landmarks, what made them special and why they eventually disappeared. We also look back at 12 classic arcade games that kept me coming back with pockets full of quarters, including:
- Sega’s deluxe sit-in cabinets like Thunderblade and G-Lock
- High-octane racers like Virtua Racing and Daytona USA
- Multiplayer favorites like NBA Jam, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and The Simpsons
- Fighting game legends like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2
- Unforgettable retro gems like Smash TV, Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder, and NARC
Whether you spent your weekends at these specific spots or have memories of your own local arcades, this is a nostalgic look back at a simpler time when a single token was a ticket to adventure. We’ll explore the shift from dark, row-based arcades to massive entertainment complexes and how the rise of home consoles like the PlayStation, Dreamcast, and Nintendo 64 changed the industry forever.
What were your favorite arcades growing up? Which games did you spend the most quarters on? Let’s keep the memories alive in the comments.
