Description

A shirt can pass the sniff test on the hanger and fail it the minute the car heater comes on. You are not imagining it, and a bigger scoop of detergent will not get it all out. In my mother's kitchen in Lipa, Batangas, the shirts spent a whole hour under water before anyone touched a collar. Your washer has an hour too. I read one Whirlpool cycle guide to see how that hour gets spent, and found the button I left alone for six years. If you have ever typed why does my laundry smell into a search bar, start here. WHERE THE SMELL LIVES - In a 2020 University of Alberta study, with the textile scientist Rachel McQueen among the authors, cotton and polyester were soiled with sweat-like compounds and washed over and over with two detergents. The cotton came out cleaner. Polyester repels water, and the university notes it naturally attracts oil from skin. - From the fifth wash to the tenth, the level of those compounds in the fabric stopped climbing. The university called that the good news: a favorite shirt will probably only reach a certain level of smelliness. WHY IT WAITS FOR THE HEATER - Febreze's science page says odor held in fabric can rebloom into the air when the temperature rises, and heat speeds it up. Your body warms the shirt from the inside. THE MUG TEST, TONIGHT - Hold a clean shirt's underarm a few inches above a steaming mug for one minute, fingers clear of the steam, then smell it. Read the label, then comment with the fabric and what your nose found. WHAT YOUR WASHER DOES WITH ITS HOUR - Whirlpool's 2025 cycle guide for one top loader lists an average of 60 minutes on Normal, and filling, rinsing and spinning all come out of that hour. The guide also says it is normal for some of the clothes to ride above the water line. - Tide Cleaners writes that too-much-detergent problems cannot be fixed by adding more, and that machines using less water are more likely to leave the extra on your clothes. Scent beads go on top of that, and Febreze says covering an odor may leave the original one behind. - The same guide lists a 30 Minute Presoak, and with Pause pressed and the lid closed, a load can sit in water for up to three hours before the machine drains it. MY MOTHER'S HOUR, IN SIX STEPS 1. Sort first, so a red shirt never spends an hour with your whites. 2. Warm water, no warmer than the care label allows. 3. Dissolve a little detergent, or oxygen powder if the shirt's label allows it, before the shirts go in, and test a hidden spot on colored shirts. 4. Push every shirt under the water, weigh the pile down with a dinner plate in the batya, the wide washing basin, and leave it the full hour. 5. Magkusot, to wash clothes by rubbing, cloth on cloth at the underarms, collar and waistband only. 6. Finish in the machine, with detergent measured to the line on the cap. Never put wool or silk through this. OxiClean warns they can shrink and lose color. THREE HABITS - One day a week for the polyester work shirt, the gym shirt and the blouse that smells by lunch. Cotton gives up its smell to the wash more easily. - Detergent to the line, every load. - Nothing sits wet, in the basin or in the drum. The Alberta write-up warns that a polyester shirt's smell may never fully leave. So if one still smells after two rounds, you did nothing wrong, and it has earned a new job as your gardening shirt.
