Description
The power’s gone off. Most power cuts are short, but if this one lasts for hours or even days, the first ten minutes can make a real difference.
In this Quick Prep, I’ll show you exactly what I’d do first during a power cut. We’ll cover lighting, protecting electronics, medical equipment, keeping your fridge and freezer cold, finding out what’s happening, conserving your phone battery and preparing in case the outage lasts much longer than expected.

If you’re in England, Scotland or Wales, you can call 105 during a power cut. It’s free and connects you to your local electricity network operator.
If you’re in Northern Ireland, contact NIE Networks on 03457 643 643.
The important thing during the first few minutes of an outage is not to panic or start using emergency supplies unnecessarily. Protect what you already have.
Save your phone battery. Keep the fridge and freezer shut. Switch off anything that could be damaged or become dangerous when the electricity returns. Get your lighting sorted and find out how widespread the outage actually is.
Then start thinking ahead.
If the power comes back in twenty minutes, you’ve lost nothing. But if it stays off overnight or longer, conserving your batteries, food, water and communications from the beginning could make things considerably easier.
Let me know in the comments whether you already knew about 105.
