Description
In the 1920s and 30s, Canadian newspapers ran a story that sounds almost invented: a group of Russian immigrant farmers walking naked, in orderly rows, down a rural highway, protesting a government that wanted their children in state-run schools. They weren't Amish. They were Doukhobors — and their story is one of five more Christian communities that live something like the Amish do, each built on its own scripture, its own history, and its own answer to the same question: how much of the modern world can you let in before it stops being the world's problem and starts being yours.
We'll explore:
- The Old Order River Brethren, a group of only a few hundred people torn apart repeatedly over whether a car was acceptable
- The Old Colony Mennonites, hundreds of thousands scattered across Mexico, Belize, Bolivia, and Paraguay — some still driving cars converted into horse-drawn wagons
- The Amana Colonies of Iowa, once fully communal villages that voted, in a single afternoon, to give the whole system up
- The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, a group that won't share a meal with an outsider while owning billions of dollars in registered companies
- The Doukhobors, whose radical wing turned to public nudity, arson, and bombing campaigns against government schooling
Five communities. Five completely different paths. And every one of them arrived at the same basic instinct the Amish did — that some things are worth protecting badly enough to build an entire separate life around it.
If you're new here, this channel goes deep into the real Amish world, and the wider world of communities like it. New videos every week.
