Description
A peaceful Louisiana lake suddenly began disappearing into the earth, swallowing an oil rig, barges, trees, buildings and approximately sixty-five acres of land.
Beneath Lake Peigneur, fifty-two miners were working inside an enormous salt mine. When water found a path underground, it began dissolving the salt around it. The opening grew, the lake became a giant whirlpool, and the disaster triggered something even stranger: a canal connected to the Gulf of Mexico began flowing backward.
This is the extraordinary true story of the Lake Peigneur disaster of November 20, 1980, including the miners’ remarkable escape, the temporary waterfall created in southern Louisiana, the barges that resurfaced and the evidence that disappeared before investigators could determine exactly how the catastrophe began.
