Description
Thousands of Heinkel He 111s were built for the Luftwaffe. Three real ones are left.
It was the bomber the world first learned to recognize — a glazed nose, two engines, a shape that flew over London and over Spain and over the Eastern Front. It was built in numbers that make the arithmetic almost impossible to believe. For a machine that common, there should be dozens in museums.
The easy answer is that bombers get shot down, and the ones that aren't get scrapped.
That isn't the whole story.
Because other aircraft of the same era, built in similar numbers, survive by the dozen. Same war. Same factories. Same scrapyards. A completely different outcome.
In this video: what the He 111 actually was and why its silhouette became the most recognizable bomber shape of its decade; how a wartime production run that large can leave almost nothing behind; what happens to an airframe between the end of a war and a museum floor; and why the aircraft that survive are almost never the ones you'd expect.
The three that remain are not trophies. They are accidents of paperwork, salvage and geography — and one of them is not quite what the placard says.
This is what happened to the rest of them.
