BREAKING: DAVID UMAHI CHALLENGES PETER OBI'S 2027 SOUTHEAST SUPPORT! TINUBU, IGBO MARGINALISATION, FEDERAL APPOINTMENTS AND MAJOR ROAD PROJECTS DOMINATE HEATED ARISE NEWS INTERVIEW!
Nigeria's Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, makes a controversial declaration about the 2027 presidential election during an interview with ARISE News anchor Ojy Okpe, arguing that the Southeast's overwhelming support for Peter Obi in 2023 will not necessarily be repeated in 2027.
Umahi describes the Southeast's 2023 voting pattern as an "accident of history," claiming that the region supported Obi largely because of anger over years of political marginalisation, inadequate federal appointments and neglected infrastructure under the previous administration.
The minister insists that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has changed the situation through federal appointments, ongoing road construction and infrastructure investment across the Southeast. He predicts that voters who expressed anger in 2023 will express appreciation in 2027.
But will Southeast voters accept Umahi's assessment? Can federal road projects and political appointments reshape the region's electoral choices?
Umahi argues that serving governors, former governors, traditional rulers and influential political stakeholders are increasingly aligned with Tinubu. He questions whether the region would abandon what he considers tangible development gains for another political gamble.
The interview also addresses allegations of political betrayal, the loyalty of Southeast leaders to Peter Obi, attacks by social media supporters and growing tensions between supporters of Tinubu and Obi.
Umahi criticises insults directed at Igbo political leaders who support the APC, warning that ethnic hostility and regional antagonism could undermine the Southeast's long-term political interests.
He further argues that producing a future Nigerian president from the Southeast requires negotiation, political alliances and cooperation with other regions rather than permanent loyalty to one presidential candidate.
When directly challenged about whether Tinubu could defeat Peter Obi in the Southeast in 2027, Umahi responds emphatically: "That is what is going to happen!"
His prediction remains a political assessment, not an established election outcome.
Watch the full ARISE News interview for Umahi's statements on Peter Obi, Tinubu's infrastructure agenda, Southeast marginalisation, Igbo political interests, the APC and the battle over Nigeria's 2027 presidential election.
