Description

Credits: Associated Press, Paternity Court, AP Archive, Anomaly Documentaries In 2005, Roy Pearson, an administrative law judge in Washington, D.C., took a local dry-cleaning business called Custom Cleaners to court over a pair of trousers that he claimed had been lost or returned to him damaged. The shop was owned by South Korean immigrants Soo and Jin Chung, who insisted they had done nothing wrong and tried to resolve the dispute. However, Pearson filed a lawsuit seeking an astonishing $54 million in damages, arguing that the cleaners had violated consumer protection laws, partly because of signs advertising “Satisfaction Guaranteed” and “Same Day Service.” His demands included compensation for alleged inconvenience and expenses associated with using alternative cleaners. The case went to trial in 2007, where Pearson represented himself, but Judge Judith Bartnoff ruled in favor of the dry cleaners, finding that he had failed to prove his claims. She rejected his argument that the shop's signs guaranteed satisfaction under any circumstances. . . .
