Description

Did Ancient India have a concept of infinity long before modern mathematics? In this episode of VEDIC SCIENCE FILES, we explore the fascinating world of Jain Mathematics and one of its most interesting ideas — the classification of quantities. Jain intellectual traditions developed sophisticated discussions around numbers, time, space, the universe and enormous quantities. One important classification distinguishes: 🔢 Sankhyāta — Enumerable / countable ♾️ Asankhyāta — Innumerable ∞ Ananta — Infinite The fascinating part is that these categories don't simply treat “very large” and “infinite” as the same thing. A quantity can be enormously large and still be finite. But an infinite quantity has no final endpoint. In this video, we explore the mathematical and cosmological context of these ideas and ask an important question: How did Jain thinkers conceptualize quantities that seemed beyond ordinary counting? This is not just a story about mathematics. It is a journey into the intellectual traditions of ancient India and the way different cultures approached number, infinity, space and the cosmos.
