Description
The roomette is the room most of us book for our first sleeper trip. For many travelers over 65 it's exactly right, and for some it's the wrong room. Here's the honest version: what it does beautifully, where it pinches, and who should book something else.
I'm Stanley Pike, and in this video I cover the four things the roomette does well (a real flat bed, privacy, value for two, and why it's nearly perfect when you travel alone), the five catches the pictures don't show (space for two, the upper bunk with less than two feet of headroom, the bathroom down the hall, luggage, and the stairs on double-decker trains), who should skip it, how a couple can share one well, and the three questions to answer before you book.
Not affiliated with Amtrak. Room features from Amtrak's own roomette and sleeping car pages as of 2026; bed and headroom measurements from a published Superliner roomette review (The Points Guy). Cars and equipment vary by train, so check your own.
My guide to a calm first night in a sleeper, Sleep Well on Amtrak After 65: https://stanleypike.com
And my full method for pricing a trip in the right order, How I Saved $5,000 on Amtrak After 65, is there too.
