Description

On my first ride on a double-decker train, I went downstairs to find the dining car and walked straight into a wall. Nobody had told me. That was the first of many things you only learn once the train is rolling. Here are twelve of them, so the surprises happen at home, not on board. I'm Stanley Pike, a lifelong Amtrak rider from Omaha (not an Amtrak employee). In this video: - moving around: why you can only walk between cars upstairs on a Superliner, how to walk a moving train, where your big bag really goes - food: dining car reservations, what coach riders can and can't use, when the café closes - the journey: stops in the middle of nowhere, no Wi-Fi or signal for hours, crew changes along the way, the rules at long stops - safety and joy: what happens if you feel unwell, and the park guides who ride some trains CHAPTERS [00:00] The door that wasn't there [00:47] Every train has two rulebooks [01:30] 1. You can only walk between cars upstairs [02:47] 2. How to walk a moving train [03:49] 3. Your big bag won't be near your seat [04:46] 4. The dining car runs on reservations [05:45] 5. In coach, the dining car may not be yours [06:46] 6. Stopped in the middle of nowhere [07:54] A quick word about my guide [08:23] 7. The café closes [09:22] 8. No Wi-Fi, no signal, for hours [10:32] 9. The crew changes along the way [11:41] 10. Long stops have rules (my coffee story) [12:45] 11. If you feel unwell on board [13:47] 12. A park guide may ride with you [14:44] All twelve in one minute [15:23] The honest part [16:03] Your three-thing card Not affiliated with Amtrak. Equipment, dining and café service vary by route and change over time, so check Amtrak.com before you ride. If you have a health condition or balance concerns, talk to your doctor before a long trip.
