Description
The first time my wife and I rode in an Amtrak sleeping car, we paid for a long list of things and used about half of them. We sat on a hard bench while a quiet lounge waited down the hall, and I lay awake in a room that had its own temperature control. Here are all fifteen sleeper perks in one place, in the order you'll meet them.
I'm Stanley Pike, a lifelong Amtrak rider from Omaha (not an Amtrak employee). In this video:
- at the station: lounge access, what's inside, private waiting rooms, priority boarding
- in your room: help with bags, temperature control, outlet, lights and night light, call button, a place for everything
- at the table and at night: meals in the dining car or your room, water, coffee and tea, turndown service, shower towels and soap, morning coffee
Not affiliated with Amtrak. Amenities are from Amtrak's sleeper and station lounge pages and the Amtrak blog as of 2026; lounge access is limited to the three hours before departure for originating passengers. Not every train or car has every amenity, and dining differs by route. Check Amtrak.com before you travel. Anything about your health, medications, or medical equipment on board is a question for your doctor, and for Amtrak when you book.
