Description
In September 1944, Adolf Hitler staked his newest tanks and his last real chance to stop General Patton's Third Army on a single counterattack through the fog of Lorraine, France. What rolled toward the American lines were brand-new Panther tanks, better armored and better armed than almost anything the US Army had in the field, crewed by green replacements with barely two weeks of training.
Waiting for them around a quiet crossroads village called Arracourt was a scratch American force built around Sherman tanks and paper-thin M18 Hellcat tank destroyers that were never supposed to win a straight fight against a Panther. Over eleven days of ambushes in the mist, a deception plan borrowed from a famous old radio broadcast, and one of the strangest weapons ever flown in the war, that American force turned Hitler's elite strike force into one of the most lopsided defeats on the entire Western Front — and helped forge the tactics, and the officer, whose name now rides on the side of every M1 Abrams tank in the US Army.
This is the story of how fog became a weapon, how equipment lost to experience, and how eleven days on a French farm helped shape the way America still fights with tanks today.
