Description

The American coot looks like a duck, but it isn't one. It can barely fly, it can't swim fast, and every spring it raises its chicks on a floating nest of dead reeds, in open water, surrounded by predators. And when food runs short, it does something very few birds do: the mother grabs her weakest chick by the head and shakes it, until it stops asking to be fed. This documentary follows one pair of American coots through a full breeding season in a California cattail marsh from the courtship chase to the finished nest, from the first egg to the night a mink steals one, from the hatching of the strange red-headed chicks to the hard choice the parents make about which of them will survive. WHAT YOU'LL SEE How coots court the chase, the raised wings, the flashing white tail How a nest is built on water with no ground underneath Why coots can count their own eggs (and reject a stranger's) Incubation through heat, wind, rain and night A mink raid on the nest and how the mother reacts Hatching, one chick at a time, and the chicks' bizarre orange "costume" Brood reduction: why the parents feed the brightest chicks first, why they shake the ones that beg too much, and what happens to the one that falls behind The two survivors growing up, diving, and escaping the mink on their own WHY WE MADE THIS Most bird videos stop at the cute part. We didn't. Brood reduction, tousling and the loss of the weakest chick are real, documented behaviours of the American coot, studied by biologists for decades. Our goal is not to shock, but to show what can happen and how it really happens in the wild, with this species, so that you understand the reasons behind it. Nothing here is exaggerated, and nothing is judged. It is nature, doing arithmetic. ABOUT THE FOOTAGE (AI DISCLOSURE) The visuals in this documentary are AI-generated recreations, built scene by scene from real, published knowledge of American coot behaviour, habitat and life cycle. No real animals were filmed, disturbed or harmed. The narration, script, structure and every scene were written and directed by a human. Where science is uncertain, we say so. If you spot an inaccuracy, tell us in the comments — we correct our films. 0:00 Intro – The bird that shouldn't survive 0:30 The chase – courtship in the reeds 1:30 A nest with no ground 2:45 One egg a day – and a bird that can count 3:45 Three weeks of waiting 4:30 The mink – a few minutes is enough 5:45 Hatching – the red-headed chicks 6:45 First days on the water 7:45 Brood reduction – why she shakes her chick 9:15 The one that fell behind 9:45 Growing up – diving, escaping, surviving 10:30 Next spring Species: American coot (Fulica americana) Habitat: freshwater cattail marsh, central California Predators shown: American mink, northern harrier (shadow), largemouth bass If this film taught you something, subscribe for the next full growth cycle.
