Description
A grey wolf climbs toward a cliff nest on the Arctic tundra. The female peregrine falcon has just laid her first egg. The wolf is forty times heavier than the falcons — and the male still attacks. He doesn't grab. He strikes with a closed foot, like a fist.
Follow one peregrine falcon family through an entire Arctic summer: the fight for the nest, the long weeks of incubation under the midnight sun, a hunt at more than 300 km/h, a hatching filmed up close, the eggs that never hatch, and two chicks growing from wet, helpless hatchlings into young falcons taking their first flight.

PEREGRINE FALCON — YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
1. How fast is a peregrine falcon?
It is the fastest animal on Earth. In a hunting dive, called a stoop, peregrines pass 300 km/h (around 200 mph), and one was clocked at about 389 km/h (242 mph).
2. Does a peregrine falcon really punch its targets?
Yes. In a dive it often curls one foot into a fist and strikes, stunning or knocking down prey. Parents use the same strike to drive predators away from the nest.
3. Would a falcon really attack a wolf?
Peregrines aggressively defend their nests against much larger animals. In Alaska, wolves and foxes are known predators of peregrine nests built on low cliffs and river bluffs. The falcons can't kill a wolf — they harass it with repeated dives until it leaves.
4. How does a falcon breathe at that speed?
Small bony cones inside its nostrils, called tubercles, slow the incoming air so it can breathe normally during a dive.
5. How does it protect its eyes?
A clear third eyelid, the nictitating membrane, slides across each eye like goggles.
6. Where do peregrine falcons nest?
They don't build nests. The female scrapes a shallow hollow in gravel or soil on a cliff ledge — or on bridges and tall buildings in cities.
7. How many eggs do they lay?
Usually 3 to 4, sometimes 2 to 5, laid about two to three days apart. The eggs are reddish-brown and heavily speckled.
8. How long do the eggs take to hatch?
About 33 to 35 days. The female does most of the incubating, and always sits through the night.
9. Why don't all the eggs hatch?
Some eggs are infertile, and some embryos stop developing. Unhatched eggs often stay in the nest; sometimes the parents push them out or eat them.
10. What does the male do while the female incubates?
He hunts for both of them. He often plucks the prey first and passes it to her — sometimes in mid-air, with the female flipping upside down to catch it.
11. What do peregrine falcons eat?
Mostly other birds. On the Arctic tundra that means longspurs, shorebirds, ducks and ptarmigan.
12. Do the parents eat the eggshells?
Yes. After hatching, the mother sets the shells aside and often eats them to rebuild her calcium.
13. How fast do the chicks grow?
Very fast. They double their weight in their first days, grow a second coat of down after about a week, and are almost fully feathered by six weeks.
14. When do young peregrines learn to fly?
At about 35 to 45 days old. Their parents keep feeding them and teach them to hunt for several more weeks.
15. How long do peregrine falcons live?
Many live around 10 years in the wild, and some reach 16 to 20.
16. Are peregrine falcons endangered?
Not anymore. They nearly vanished because of the pesticide DDT, which made their eggshells too thin. After DDT was banned, they made one of the greatest comebacks in conservation history.
