Description
🌿 Save $3,000–$5,000 a Year with My Complete Appalachian Home Methods I teach at: https://eulahatfield.com/
You push a screwdriver into the deck board by your back step and it sinks in like bread. New boards and screws for a small deck run $800 before anybody lifts a hammer — double that if you hire it out. My back porch floor was laid in 1994 from plain untreated poplar, and thirty-two years later a screwdriver still won't go in. My grandmother Martha taught me how: a six-dollar box from the laundry shelf, painted on hot. Today I show you exactly how she did it.
What is in this video:
🌿 The Hot Mix — the one-cup-per-gallon borax mix, and why cold water wastes most of what you buy
🌿 The Wet-Hollow Mix — the pharmacy-shelf cousin that makes borax dissolve stronger, for shaded decks and rainy country
🌿 The Soak and Wrap — a plastic trough from two old 2x4s, and the plastic-wrap step almost nobody does that drives it deep into new boards
🌿 The Three-Coat Brush — how to get it into a deck that is already nailed down, and the hidden seam where rot starts first
🌿 The Ground-Line Post — the overnight bucket soak, the gravel bed, and the slanted top that keep posts from dying at the dirt
🌿 The Seal — a thin linseed coat that holds the borax in, and the simple upkeep every few years
⚠️ Honest limits — borax is harmful if swallowed, so keep kids and pets off wet wood. Wear gloves and glasses. It can't save wood that is already rotten, and a soft post or joist needs a professional look before anyone stands on it. I also tell you about the garden mistake I made with it, so you don't repeat it. And linseed-oil rags can catch fire on their own. The honest word, not skipped.
💰 What it costs — about $6 for a box of borax and $8–$10 for boric acid, enough for a good-sized deck, versus $800 or more to replace boards. And the tag on your treated lumber that says "Above Ground" or "Ground Contact" — what it means and why it matters. There is no company that can patent a mineral dug out of the ground. They can only sell it in a nicer bottle.
Tell me in the comments — how old is your deck or fence, and where did the first soft board show up: by the house, at the steps, or down at the posts? I read every single one.
