HEMODIALYSIS
WORKING MODEL
How the Process Works (Step-by-Step)
• Blood Withdrawal: Blood is gently drawn from the patient's body (usually through a specialized site like an AV fistula or a needle/tube in your model).
• Anti-Clotting: A special substance (like heparin in a real machine) is added so the blood does not clot while moving through the plastic tubing.
• The Dialyzer (Artificial Kidney): The blood flows into a special filter called a dialyzer. Inside this filter are thousands of tiny semi-permeable hollow fibers.
• Diffusion & Cleaning Fluid: A cleansing liquid called dialysate flows past these fibers in the opposite direction. Through diffusion, waste molecules (like urea and excess potassium) pass out of the blood and into the dialysate.
• What Stays Behind: Blood cells and large proteins are too big to pass through the semi-permeable membrane, so they stay safely in the bloodstream.
• Return of Clean Blood: The freshly filtered blood is checked, cleared of any tiny air bubbles, and returned back into the patient's body.
Key Scientific Principles to Mention
• Semi-Permeable Membrane: Acts as a selective barrier letting small waste molecules cross while trapping blood cells.
• Diffusion: Movement of waste particles from a region of higher concentration (blood) to lower concentration (dialysate).
• Ultrafiltration / Pressure Control: Using pressure differences to pull out extra water and fluid.
Description
Hemodialysis Working Model | How Dialysis Works | Science Project
In this video, we demonstrate a Hemodialysis Working Model that explains how blood is removed from the body, passed through a dialyzer, filtered, and returned to the body.
This educational model shows the basic working of a dialysis machine, including the blood pump, dialyzer, heparin pump, arterial pressure monitor, venous pressure monitor, air trap, air detector and blood-flow tubing.
This model is useful for school science projects, biology projects, nursing students, medical science presentations, exhibitions and educational demonstrations.
🔬 Topics covered:
What is Hemodialysis?
How does dialysis work?
Blood flow through a dialysis machine
Working of a dialyzer
Blood pump and pressure monitoring
Air trap and air detector
