Today, salt is one of the most ordinary things in your kitchen. But thousands of years ago, finding and producing it could require specialized knowledge, dangerous mining, long-distance trade, and entire communities built around its production.
In this video, we travel back thousands of years to discover how ancient humans first encountered salt, why animals may have helped them find natural salt sources, and how people learned to collect and produce salt from seawater, mineral springs, and underground deposits.
We'll explore the prehistoric salt production at Provadia-Solnitsata, the ancient underground salt mines of Hallstatt, and the remarkable ways humans learned to preserve food using salt.
But salt wasn't just food.
It became a valuable trade commodity, helped communities store meat and fish, connected distant settlements, and eventually became important enough for ancient states to control its production and use it as a source of revenue.
And while ancient humans needed to search for salt, modern humans live in a completely different world — where salt is cheap, abundant, packaged, transported across continents, and hidden in countless everyday foods.
So how did a simple mineral go from strange white crystals in the landscape to one of the most important resources in human history?
Let's go back thousands of years and find out.
