Why do Native Americans look different from Asians if their ancient ancestors came from Asia?
At first, this seems like a simple question. If the first people to enter the Americas were related to ancient populations from northeast Asia and Siberia, why don't Native Americans simply look like modern Asians?
The answer takes us thousands of years into the past.
Long before modern countries existed, ancient human populations were moving across Asia. During the Ice Age, some of these populations entered Beringia and eventually expanded into the Americas.
But they didn't remain the same.
Once populations became separated, thousands of generations began changing them. Population bottlenecks reduced some of the genetic diversity carried by the original groups. Genetic drift changed the frequency of certain traits. Natural selection acted on new environments. Populations migrated, mixed, separated again, and eventually spread across an enormous continent.
And the Americas were nothing like a single environment.
From Arctic tundra and frozen northern landscapes to deserts, mountains, forests, grasslands, and tropical regions, Indigenous populations encountered an incredible variety of environments.
So why do Native Americans look different from populations in Asia?
In this video, we explore the ancient migrations that brought humans into the Americas, the role of Beringia, population bottlenecks, genetic drift, natural selection, isolation, migration, and the complicated population history that shaped Indigenous peoples across the Americas.
We also look at why comparing modern Native Americans with modern Asians can be misleading.
The ancestors of Indigenous Americans did not separate from modern Asian populations exactly as they exist today. Their populations had already been following their own paths for thousands of years.
And that means the differences we see today are not evidence that humans split into completely separate ki
