Today, when you feel ill, you can check your temperature, measure your heart rate, get a blood test, have an X-ray or even use a smartwatch to monitor what's happening inside your body.
But ancient humans had none of these tools.
So how did they know when something was wrong?
In this video, we travel back thousands of years to discover how ancient humans recognized illness using the only diagnostic equipment they had, their own bodies, their senses and their experience.
We'll explore how people recognized symptoms such as pain, fever, fatigue, swelling, coughing and changes in behavior, and how they learned to recognize patterns even when they had no idea what was actually happening inside the body.
We'll also look at how ancient people could recognize infected wounds without knowing that bacteria existed, how communities cared for injured and sick individuals, and how medical knowledge could be passed from one generation to the next.
Then we'll compare ancient medicine with the modern world.
Today, doctors can see inside the human body, analyze blood, identify microorganisms, monitor heart rhythms and detect diseases that ancient humans could never have diagnosed.
But surprisingly, the basic process begins in almost the same place:
Something feels different.
Your body sends a signal.
You notice it.
And you try to understand what it means.
So how much could ancient humans actually understand about illness without modern medicine?
Let's go back thousands of years and discover how humans learned to recognize sickness long before thermometers, hospitals and laboratories existed.
