I decided to try making my own yogurt -- It's simpler than I thought, cheaper than the store, and much more delicious. I made my own granola too. I think you're going to love these.
Crockpot Yogurt Recipe:
1/2 gal whole fat milk
1/4 cup yogurt w Live Action Cultures
Pour all of the milk into crockpot. Set temp to low and heat for 2 1/2 hours or 180 degrees. Turn crockpot off and let cool with the lid on for 3 hours or lid slightly ajar for 1 1/2 hrs or to 110 degrees. Stir a small amount of the warm milk into the yogurt. Mix well then stir into the warm milk. Insulate the crockpot with towels. Place on a baking sheet and put in the oven with the light on. Let the mixture incubate for 8-10 hrs. Remove from oven. Yogurt is now done unless you want it to be thick, then you strain the yogurt through a flour sack towel, cheese cloth or what you have on hand. Put in the refrigerator for the next 3-5 hours or until it has reached the thickness you desire. Yum!
Granola Recipe:
1 1/2 cups oats
1 cup coconut shreads
2 T chia seeds
1 1/2 cups nuts - pecans, walnuts, pistachios, pumpkin seeds, your choice, give a rough chop
1/2-1 cup chopped dates or raisins or other dried fruit
3 T coconut oil
3 T maple syrup
Mix all ingredients well. Spread on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake at 275 degrees for 45 minutes
**This is the perfect recipe to play with. Other things to try adding are cinnamon, peanut butter, mini chocolate chips, m&m's, honey rather than maple syrup. I like it with just the sweetness of the dates.
