Description

In the history of art, there are great artists... and then there is Caravaggio. In his time, every great painter began with drawings, sketches, and full-size cartoons before ever touching the canvas. Caravaggio did not. He placed real models in front of his easel, lit them with a single light source, and painted directly onto the canvas. In this video we explore Christ at the Column, painted while Caravaggio was living as a fugitive in Naples, how his radical method shaped every detail of this work, and the incredible story of how this masterpiece hung for years in a French museum under the name of another painter. ► Shop "Christ at the Column" (1606) at - https://www.inspiraggio.com/products/christ-at-the-column-caravaggio-c-1606-07 ► Shop Art Prints & Canvas at - https://www.inspiraggio.com/collections/shop-all ► Shop Fine Art Phone Cases at - https://www.inspiraggio.com/collections/iphone-cases → Join our FREE newsletter: https://www.inspiraggio.com/pages/newsletter → Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/inspiraggio → Contact: [email protected] 0:00 Introduction 1:04 Christ at the Column 2:01 Caravaggio's Technique 4:07 Analysis 5:42 Caravaggisti SOURCES Wikipedia — Christ at the Column (Caravaggio) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_at_the_Column_(Caravaggio) Andrew Graham-Dixon — "Caravaggio: A Life Sacred and Profane" (Penguin Books, 2010) Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen — "Caravage, un coup de fouet" (exhibition) https://mbarouen.fr/fr/expositions/caravage-un-coup-de-fouet Art Absolument — "Caravage, un coup de fouet" (interview with curator Diederik Bakhuÿs) https://artabsolument.com/en/default/exhibition/detail/4058 Hôtels Littéraires — Longhi, Laclotte and the rediscovery of the Rouen Caravaggio https://hotelslitteraires.fr/?p=11878 Novus Art — "A Brief Look at Caravaggio's Technique" https://novusart.co.uk/caravaggio/ Nardini Editore — "New evaluations on Caravaggio's methods of underdrawing" https://nardinieditore.it/?p=5797 Giulio Mancini — "Considerazioni sulla pittura" (1614–1621) Giovanni Pietro Bellori — "Le vite de' pittori, scultori et architetti moderni" (1672) Roberto Longhi — "Un originale del Caravaggio a Rouen e il problema delle copie caravaggesche" (Paragone, 1960) #arthistory #art Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education, and research.
