Description

Credits: Nas Daily, Alice Cooper In 2005, Canadian blogger Kyle MacDonald embarked on a remarkable social experiment inspired by the childhood game Bigger and Better, launching the "One Red Paperclip" project. Armed with nothing more than a single red paperclip on his desk, his goal was to trade upward through a series of progressive barters until he secured a house. Documenting his journey online, MacDonald leveraged internet culture, blogs, and media attention to find willing traders. Over the course of a year, he successfully executed a chain of 14 trades, systematically increasing the value and utility of the items with each transaction. His journey saw him exchange everyday items for progressively more unique and valuable goods, moving from a fish-shaped pen and a doorknob to a camping stove, a generator, and eventually a snowmobile. As the project gained viral fame, the trades grew more high-profile, including a recording contract, an afternoon with rock star Alice Cooper, and a movie role. Finally, on July 12, 2006, MacDonald traded the movie role—provided by actor Corbin Bernsen—to the town of Kipling, Saskatchewan, in exchange for a two-story farmhouse, completely fulfilling his ambitious goal and demonstrating the extraordinary power of network-based bartering. . . .
