Description

A tick’s life is built around a difficult biological problem: it needs blood to develop, yet finding and remaining on a host exposes it to a new set of dangers. This natural-history documentary follows a representative three-host hard-tick life cycle from eggs and six-legged larvae to eight-legged nymphs and adults. Watch a tiny larva climb vegetation and quest for its first host, feed, drop away and moult — only to begin the search again. As the tick reaches adulthood, larger mammals can provide valuable feeding opportunities. But a host is not simply a source of blood. Scratching, rubbing and grooming can remove parasites, while other animals may actively search for them as prey. On an African warthog, banded mongooses have been documented approaching resting animals, climbing onto their bodies and feeding on ticks. Oxpeckers also search the bodies of large African mammals and consume ticks and other ectoparasites. For the tick, this creates a remarkable paradox: The host is essential for survival — but the host can also become a hunting ground. Follow the full journey from egg → larva → questing → host → blood meal → nymph → adult → reproduction → a new generation.
