In 2013, Daymond John offered $300,000 for 30 percent of Bubba's Q, the patented boneless rib invented by former NFL defensive end Al Bubba Baker. By 2017 the ribs were on a burger at Carl's Jr. and Hardee's and sales were announced at $16 million. Then came a 2019 settlement with a lifelong non-disparagement clause, a supplier cutoff, a viral LA Times story, and a federal ruling that found the Bakers breached the deal and that John and the Rastellis did not. According to the court, John put in at least $200,000 and got back about $112,000. We went through the federal court opinions, the settlement terms, the patent records and the reporting from both sides to answer one question: who actually made money?
