Description

Some people paddle through garbage-filled water just to get home. Others sleep in tin shacks beside burning e-waste, on stilts above an open lagoon, or in a single room where the bed, the stove and the toilet are an arm's length apart. This 4K documentary visits 34 of the world's harshest slums, from Kibera and Makoko to Skid Row, Tondo and Europe's largest Roma settlement, and asks a simple question: why do millions of people still call these places home? The answers are rarely about choice. Some stay because the port, the dump site or the wealthy district next door is the only place they can earn money. Some have no documents, no savings or no landlord who will accept them anywhere else. And many stay because their neighbours are the only safety net they have. In this film: - Agbogbloshie and Old Fadama in Accra, where copper is stripped from burning cables - Makoko, the "Venice of Africa", and Belén, a floating slum on the Amazon - Kibera, Mathare and Dandora in Nairobi - Rocinha, Paraisópolis, Petare, Villa 31 and La Limonada in Latin America - Tondo, Baseco, Khlong Toei, Korail, Geneva Camp and Orangi Town in Asia - Hong Kong's Monster Building and Tokyo's hidden San'ya district - Khayelitsha, Alexandra, Kliptown, Diepsloot and Imizamo Yethu in South Africa - Skid Row in Los Angeles and Europe's poorest Roma neighborhoods ▶ Watch next: URBAN HELLS | Life in the Most Disgusting Places on Earth: https://youtu.be/2ShGongyAls WHY THEY STAY | The Most Extreme Places on Earth People Refuse to Leave: https://youtu.be/S6ELmP50OBA TOXIC HELLS | Life in the Most Poisoned Places on Earth: https://youtu.be/H0rwjzFaGMQ Which of these places surprised you the most, and what do you think would help the people living there?
