Description
Belgium, June 1944. Four days after the Allies landed in Normandy, the tanks of the 1st SS Panzer Division had orders to roll toward the beaches. Then the order was halted, and the tanks stayed north. Berlin had been warned that a second and bigger invasion was still coming, led by George Patton and aimed straight at Calais.
The warning came from Germany's best spy in Britain. Patton's army did not exist. Neither did the spy's informants. And the spy was working for London.
So nobody writes in about it, here is the honest part. Historians like Michael Howard and Roger Hesketh tie his message closely to that halt. But German commanders already feared a second landing, and Hitler himself had pointed to Normandy that spring. The message probably did not create the fear. It confirmed it at exactly the wrong moment for Germany, and those were days the Germans could not get back.
The spy was Juan Pujol García, a Spaniard the British turned away in 1941. So he went to the Germans instead, settled in Lisbon, and wrote reports about a country he had never visited, built out of a tourist guidebook, a railway timetable, magazines and newsreels. He invented Glasgow dockers who would do anything for a liter of wine. He could not work out British money. The Germans paid anyway. When MI5 finally found him, they brought him to London, paired him with Tomás Harris, and named him Garbo, because they thought he was the best actor in the world.
What we go through:
How Germany went nearly blind over Britain, and why every Abwehr agent there was caught or turned The spy who made up England from Lisbon, and the convoy that sent British codebreakers hunting for him Twenty-seven invented subagents, and the feedback loop Bletchley Park gave the lies Lie one, FUSAG and Patton, and why the slapping scandal made him the perfect fake commander Lie two, shoulder patches, Brutus, and radio chatter from headquarters that were only transmitters Why rubber tanks were never the main event Lie three, seventy-five divisions instead of about fifty, and how the Fifteenth Army became an anchor Lie four, the true D-Day warning that Madrid was not awake to hear Lie five, the two-hour message of June 8 and how it climbed to Hitler's headquarters Lie six, the invasion that was never cancelled, only postponed Lie seven, a phantom army that lost its new commander to a real war One man, two medals, from both sides
There is no magic in any of this. Nobody handed the Germans a finished picture. Their own analysts built it from fragments, and people defend conclusions they believe they reached themselves.
Tonight, think about it the way Berlin should have. If the only witness you trust has never once been checked, how much of what you know is really his story?
Tell me in the comments where you are watching from. And tell me this: which of the seven lies do you think did the most damage?
