Description
During World War II, the U.S. Army issued its soldiers equipment designed to keep them alive. But on the beaches of Normandy, in the hedgerows of France, and deep in the Pacific jungles, American GIs often refused to carry it.
Gas masks were abandoned on Omaha Beach. Infantrymen discarded bulky packs, removed parts from their weapons, and rejected rations they could barely stomach. Some decisions made perfect sense in combat. Others had devastating consequences.
In this video, we examine 9 things the U.S. Army issued during WWII that soldiers hated, modified, or threw away — from uncomfortable canvas leggings and oversized bayonets to winter clothing and the controversial Atabrine malaria tablets.
Why did experienced soldiers reject equipment meant to protect them? When were the GIs right, and when did those decisions cost thousands of men their health?
Discover the surprising difference between what Army planners thought soldiers needed and what combat actually demanded.
