Description
WW2, from the records. https://warshelf.com/
December 8, 1941. Hitler hears the news from Pearl Harbor and can barely contain himself. "We can't lose the war at all." His armies are freezing to a standstill outside Moscow, and now Japan will pin America down in the Pacific. In Tokyo the planners are making the same calculation from the other side: hit the United States so hard, and take so much so fast, that fighting back costs more than Americans are willing to pay. Two governments place the same bet — that America is one country with one military that can only point in one direction at a time. Three days later Hitler declares war on the United States, which the Tripartite Pact never required of him, expecting Japan to repay him by turning on the Soviets. Japan never does. And the bet was already settled. In July 1940, with France fallen, Congress passed the Two-Ocean Navy Act — 257 more warships, a fleet built to fight in both oceans at once. The House vote was 316 to 0. That December the Allies choose Germany first, and America still has enough left over to sink four Japanese carriers at Midway six months later. In September 1945 Japan signs its surrender aboard the USS Missouri, laid down in January 1941 under that same act. The answer to the Axis bet was ordered before the bet was placed.
