Description

Someone with $40 in checking can pay their bank more in a year than someone with $25 million. That's not a glitch. It's how the system is built. Today we walk through how banks treat you at every level of wealth, from $0 all the way to $25 million. You'll see where overdraft fees and monthly bank fees hit hardest, where the perks start showing up, and the surprisingly low balance where your bank stops treating you as a profit and starts treating you as a customer. What you'll learn: โ€ข Why people with the least money pay the most in overdraft fees, and how a $5 coffee can end up costing $40 โ€ข How monthly bank fees work, and the minimum balance (often around $1,500) that makes them disappear โ€ข What changes at $20K, $100K, and $250K, including reward programs, your own personal banker, and the government's deposit protection limit โ€ข How millionaires borrow against their investments at rates lower than a typical car loan โ€ข The "secret number" for most people, and the 2-minute setting you can change tonight Why this matters The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reports that banks collect billions of dollars every year from overdraft and bounced-payment fees, and most of that money comes from a small group of customers with the lowest balances. About 4% of US households have no bank account at all, according to the FDIC's national survey, and many of them pay check-cashing stores just to access their own paychecks. Being broke is expensive, and the way banks charge fees is a big reason why. But the ladder works both ways. Once you understand how banks treat you at each level, you can climb it on purpose. You don't need $25 million. For most people, the first big shift happens somewhere around $1,000 to $2,000. Your 2-minute move tonight 1. Open your banking app. 2. Type "overdraft" into the search bar. 3. Turn off overdraft coverage for debit card and ATM purchases. Under federal rules, your bank needs your permission to charge overdraft fees on these. Once it's off, your card is simply declined instead of costing you up to $35. 4. While you're there, check your monthly fee. If you're paying one, ask your bank how to waive it, or compare a credit union or online bank with no monthly fee.
