Description
Every February, on a bare plant that looks completely dead, brown buds begin to swell — and then the petals peel backward and a perfect sphere of long pale stamens bursts out like a shaving brush. It's Pseudobombax ellipticum, and it's the most visually arresting flower I've ever shown on this channel.
I am Elias Yoder, and I farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This tree isn't a true caudex plant — but its smooth green trunk stores water and photosynthesizes even with no leaves, building both a living sculpture and the energy for that February show. Today I'm giving you the complete method: the dry-season cycle the plant is built around, container and soil, full summer sun, summer vs. winter watering, progressive trunk elevation, strategic (not aggressive) pruning, and the winter grow light that makes the biggest difference to the flower count.
