Description
50 insane geography facts about Long Island that sound fake but aren't. It's the biggest island in the lower 48, built entirely from glacier rubble. It once had the only prairie east of the Appalachians. Every Apollo Lunar Module was built there. And the U.S. Supreme Court effectively ruled that it isn't an island at all.
This countdown covers why Long Island has two forks and the legend of Lake Ronkonkoma. It explains why the island drinks only from aquifers under its own feet, and how hurricanes carved new inlets through Fire Island and the barrier beaches. Along the way: Montauk, the Sunken Forest, the Pine Barrens, Plum Island, Gardiners Island and Captain Kidd's treasure, the Big Duck, Levittown, the LIRR, and Grumman's moon landers in Bethpage.
