Description
The top six feet of Lake Tahoe is legally a reservoir, controlled by a dam and a federal official, and in dry years it stops draining altogether.
There are forests of upright trees standing on the bottom of it, still rooted where they grew, because the lake used to be far lower than it is now.
And there is a fault running directly under the floor of it that is capable of throwing the water out of the basin.
Those aren't the strangest facts on this list.
15 facts about what's under Lake Tahoe — from a mountainside that slid into the water and is still lying out there in the dark, to the reason the lake exists at all.

🔎 THE ONE THAT SHOULD WORRY PEOPLE
The trees standing upright on the lake floor grew there. Some stood over a century before the water came back and drowned them, roughly a thousand years ago. That means the Sierra has had droughts lasting decades — well outside anything in the instrumental record.
