Description

A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Panama, sending shockwaves across the country and triggering panic in Panama City and central provinces like Veraguas, Herrera, Coclé, and Los Santos. With the epicenter located at a shallow depth of just 10 km near Pitaloza Arriba, the prolonged shaking caused severe structural damage and was followed by over 200 aftershocks. Authorities have declared a state of emergency as recovery efforts continue. While no fatalities have been confirmed, the disaster has left more than 30 people injured and caused widespread destruction to critical infrastructure—including over 200 schools and medical facilities, hundreds of homes, and at least 14 bridges. Classes have been suspended nationwide as officials assess the safety of educational buildings, though the Panama Canal remains operational.
