Description
How did the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, with its two-deck layout, become one of the most luxurious airliners of the postwar era, only to disappear within a few years? Developed from the military C-97 Stratofreighter, which itself evolved from the B-29 Superfortress, the Stratocruiser was designed for long-distance travel at a time when airlines were beginning to offer a faster alternative to ocean liners for crossing the Atlantic.
Its unusual double-deck fuselage gave passengers far more than just a seat. On long flights, they could move around the cabin, sleep in berths, or walk down a spiral staircase to a cocktail lounge on the lower deck, where they could sit around, have a drink, and socialize with other passengers.
In this Airspeed video, we take you inside the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser to see what flying aboard one was really like, how its unusual design made this level of luxury possible, and the challenges of operating one of the most ambitious piston-powered airliners of its era.
