Description
Cholangiocarcinoma, or bile duct cancer, is rare, quiet, and rising in adults under 50. A surgical oncologist explains what it is and the warning signs that should never be ignored.

Cholangiocarcinoma (pronounced koh-LAN-jee-oh-car-sin-OH-muh) starts in the lining of the bile ducts — the small tubes that drain bile from the liver into the intestine. There are two broad types: intrahepatic, which begins inside the liver and is often silent until it is advanced, and extrahepatic, which begins in the main duct and blocks the flow of bile. That blockage is what produces the classic warning signs:
- Yellow eyes and skin (jaundice)
- Dark, tea-colored urine
- Pale, clay-colored stools
- Persistent itching with no rash
There is no screening test for this cancer — no blood test, no scan, nothing you can ask for at a routine physical. For almost everyone, these symptoms are the first and maybe only warning you get. Painless jaundice in an adult is never normal and should be imaged promptly.
Only about 1 in 4 patients are still operable at diagnosis, and surgery remains the only cure — which is why recognizing these signs early matters so much. Anyone diagnosed should also ask whether their tumor has undergone comprehensive molecular profiling; guidelines recommend it, and roughly a third of these tumors carry a targetable alteration.
Tell me what you need explained next — staging, surgery, the newer drugs, what to ask your oncologist — and I will make a full video on it. I read every comment.
