Description
Brain-Eating Amoeba: How to Stay Safe in Ponds and Rivers š§ ā ļø
If you swim in ponds, rivers or lakes, watch this. There is a tiny organism called Naegleria fowleri, also known as the "brain-eating amoeba."
Here's what you need to know:
š It lives in warm freshwater like ponds, rivers, lakes and poorly chlorinated pools
š It infects only when contaminated water goes UP the nose, not when you drink it
š§ It travels along the olfactory (smell) nerve to the brain and destroys brain tissue
š¤ Early symptoms: severe headache, fever, vomiting
šµ Later: stiff neck, confusion, seizures, coma
ā³ It is often mistaken for bacterial meningitis, and most cases are fatal within days to 2 weeks
š It is very rare, but survival is below 5%, so prevention matters
How to stay safe:
ā
Avoid putting your head underwater in warm freshwater
ā
Use a nose clip or keep your nose closed
ā
Use only boiled, cooled or distilled water for nasal rinsing
