The Comeback Files: my guide to twelve American animals that came back from almost nothing, with the real counts and the sources. Bald eagles, elk, condors, wolves, and more.
Beneath nearly three miles of Antarctic ice, there are lakes sealed away for millions of years. Here is what scientists really found when they drilled into them, and which of the famous Antarctica rumors are true.
In 2012, Russian scientists reached Lake Vostok at 3,769 meters. Teams from Britain and the United States followed, and one of them found nearly 4,000 kinds of microbes living in the dark. This video walks through the hidden mountains, trench and volcanoes that radar has mapped, a 1.2-million-year-old ice core, and the plumbing system of more than 400 lakes. Then it checks the rumors: the Piri Reis map, "pyramids" on Google Earth, a secret Nazi base, the ice wall, and a radio signal physicists still cannot explain.
In this video you'll learn:
- How thick Antarctica's ice really is, and how scientists see through it
- What radar found under the ice: a trench, a mountain range, and 138 volcanoes
- Why Lake Vostok stays liquid under more than two miles of ice
- Why the Russians' first result was doubted
- Why the British Lake Ellsworth attempt failed
- What the American teams found in Lake Whillans and Lake Mercer
- What the Piri Reis map, the Google Earth "pyramids" and the secret German base claims get wrong
- What the ANITA radio pulses are, and why they are still unexplained
Everything here comes from published research and expedition records. Where this video offers interpretation, it says so.
Topics: Antarctica, Lake Vostok, subglacial lakes, Lake Whillans, ice cores, Antarctic science, polar exploration, Antarctica myths.
